Tuesday is the day the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) finally launches in Canada, replacing the channel formerly known as Viva.
After an initial burst of viewer interest, ratings for OWN in the U.S. - where the network has been operating since Jan. 1 - have been quite subdued. The main problem, of course, is that Oprah can't appear in every show, especially as she is continuing with her long-running syndicated talk show until later this year (it airs in Canada on CTV).
Oprah's hope, obviously, is that the positive nature of her programming and her brand eventually will win the day, although she admitted to some nervousness at the Television Critics Association tour in January.
"Literally I've said to myself, I may be completely wrong, maybe people just want to watch housewives bicker," Oprah said. "Maybe I'm all wrong. I could absolutely be all wrong. And if I am, then okay, this is a big ol' lesson.
"People on the message boards have responded in such a strong, positive way, saying, 'I'm tired of all the snark and back-biting and stuff.' That, to me, means I have found a way in, with the path that I think is the way."
