Lavalife co-founder Bruce Croxon will be breathing lava this fall as the newest Dragon on Dragons' Den, while deposed Dragon W. Brett Wilson has challenged the CBC to "evolve" the show by avoiding "faux-business conversations" and "theatrical rudeness."
CBC issued a release Monday announcing the hiring of Croxon, who will work alongside returning Dragons Arlene Dickinson, Robert Herjavec, Kevin O'Leary and Jim Treliving on the highly rated reality business-pitch show.
"I'm thrilled to be invited into one of the highly coveted Dragon chairs," Croxon said in the CBC release. "I've always been drawn to start-ups and to the challenges that come with funding early stage businesses."
Meanwhile, Wilson issued his own media release on Monday.
"I challenge CBC and the Dragons to ensure that the show's momentum in celebrating, encouraging and fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship across Canada doesn't get lost in faux-business conversations with theatrical rudeness and irrelevant commentary and advice when the real opportunity is to encourage, participate and share in the entrepreneurs' journeys," Wilson said in his release.
"Dragons' Den fans tell me constantly that they are craving true follow-up shows - not superficial snippets of information."
In a release issued last Thursday, CBC announced Wilson would not be back for the sixth season, citing a contract dispute.
"The contract re-negotiations were complicated," Wilson said in his release. "The key issues were my availability and the use of show branding to promote Dragons' Den deals."
Wilson said he remains "very much committed to the concept of Dragons' Den" but expressed interest in creating his own TV show.
